The October 2005 Completed Artworks:The installation consisted of a series specially constructed objects, miniature sculptures of fabricated flotsam. These pieces were constructed from salvaged drift material washed up along the shoreline that was once part of the legendary kingdom. These ’drift-parcels’ were hung with bells in order to represent the submerged bells of the lost towns that can still be heard beneath the waves and decorated with scraps of pottery and wax, materials that would have been used to contain wine in the fifth century. The pieces were then hung or affixed along the coastline of Cardigan Bay between the area of Sarn Gynfelyn, the causeway to Cantre’r Gwaelod’s capital and Borth, the site of the submerged forest of the bay. The artworks themselves contained sixteen individual bells between them, reflecting the legendary districts lost to the waves. The works were then installed upon the shore for a period of three weeks in October 2005 in which they resided both above and below water resulting in a unique twice daily underwater exhibition. Some photographs of the pieces in their locations can be seen below. |
